It's About Relationships

A message from Dr. Roy A. Smith, PCS Founder and CEO

“It’s all about relationships as we develop a variety of mission-driven treatment modalities which recognize the complexity and value of each individual. Our strength-based approach seeks to support children, adults, and families through their struggles, to help them develop healthy relationships, and ultimately, to help them reach their potential.”

PCS is a “mission-driven” organization with each team member on a mission to help children, adults, and families by caring about others — all to help them discover their greatness!

As a large, multi-disciplinary practice, Pennsylvania Counseling Services offers a broad range of treatment and counseling services for mental health and addictions issues in fourteen clinics across seven counties in south central Pennsylvania.

PCS is dedicated to helping others by utilizing the method and manner which best fits the therapist and client. We approach our work and our world with professionalism, flexibility, and humor, as well as a full understanding of the importance of developing healthy relationships. We encourage individual styles within our operational structure because therapy is an art, and the road to healing is a process, which is different for each individual.

Client-Counselor Relationship as Catalyst toward Growth

We best help our clients by first developing a relationship with each individual who has come to us for counseling. As we listen to and gain an understanding of our client’s world, we will be better equipped to know how to help him/her. Our clients’ issues often have to do with disturbed relationships or desired relationships not fulfilled. Developing helpful relationships with our clients is the first step towards a positive solution.

Strengthening of Relationship Skills and Community Support

Society sometimes says to us, “This person is a threat. This person has robbed a store for drugs. This person is not relating to us in society very well so we’re going to mandate him to go to counseling in order to work on relationships.” PCS assists such individuals by helping them strengthen relationship skills so they can deal with and work through past and present issues. PCS also assists with the development of a positive community support system which helps clients improve their way of life.

Family Relationships

When family dynamics are poor, we often find that lack of relationship is the cause. On the rare occasion relationships are not the problem’s cause, then at least, they are a good solution. When kids present with problems, for instance, we work to build healthy family relationships. Even when children come to us with Autism—with some unique ways of working with Spectrum Disorders, we help those kids go further by creating a situation whereby parents are relating well to their child.

As you can see, healthy relationships are part of the solution to many problems we face.
